Those who have not made an effort to be pure in heart,
and gave no attention to simplicity and truth,
cannot truly call themselves a disciple.

Dhammapada Vs 9

The Dhamma disciple.

These are the qualities to be developed by the one wishing to be a true  Dhamma disciple.
The true disciple is a quiet person. They do not run here and there seeking distraction and entertainment. They sit quietly on their cushion, allowing the deepest understanding to come to them.
They do not speak unnecessarily, or give advice and teachings to others, unless respectfully asked, and then always with humility.
They bring peace, love and friendliness to each situation and ask for nothing in return.
They manifest the qualities of Awakening, even when they themselves have not fully realized it.
Their quiet goal is to be free from the self based desires and fears that bring only further confusion and difficulties into life.
They pick up nothing more to carry, and do not consider themselves to be part of a crowd or collective identity.
Whether with the Master, alone or in a crowd, their behavior always manifests respect for themselves, the Dhamma and all beings.
They focus on Dhamma, on awareness and love in all situations, and on the development of selfless wisdom.
They are a blessing to each community and whatever conflicts may arise.
They are the bringers of peace without preference or taking sides.
They know and understand the mind of all beings, as they know and understand the mind of themselves.
Their simple, loving life is an example to others, and their path is walked patiently by following the purity of Dhamma.
These are the qualities of the Dhamma disciple.

May all beings be happy.

Koan:

The Master asked a monk, “What do you study?”
The monk replied, “the four noble truths.”
The master asked, “are you joyful yet?”
The monk replied, “no, not yet.”
“Then your work is not yet finished.”

Quotation:

Even though it may be difficult, we have to remember to be different from our usual way of being, from blindly following our usual course of action. To be free from our habits. To let go of greed, hatred and delusion and realise our new life.
